FAQ | China Cycling Tour Questions Answered | YoWhere Travel

Question 1

How fit do I need to be?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the tour. Our Hangzhou and Hainan tours are suitable for casual cyclists who ride occasionally. Yunnan and Guizhou require a moderate base fitness — you should be comfortable riding 50–70 km on consecutive days. Xinjiang and Sichuan are our most demanding routes and suit riders who train regularly. We always ask about your fitness when you enquire so we can recommend the right tour.

Question 2

I haven't cycled in years. Can I still join?

Accepted Answer

Yes — for our easier tours. The Hangzhou and Hainan circuits are designed for riders returning to cycling after a break. Daily distances are manageable, the terrain is mostly flat, and our support vehicle means you can always take a rest if needed. We'd recommend building up some base fitness before you arrive, but you don't need to be a serious cyclist.

Question 3

What happens if I can't finish a day's riding?

Accepted Answer

Our support vehicle follows the group throughout every day. If you're tired, injured or just need a break, you can ride in the van for part or all of a stage. There's no shame in it — we'd rather you arrive at the guesthouse happy than push through and injure yourself. The van is there for everyone.

Question 4

Can I join if I have a medical condition?

Accepted Answer

Please tell us about any medical conditions when you enquire. Many conditions are no barrier to joining — we just need to know so we can plan appropriately. For high-altitude tours (Sichuan, Xinjiang), we'll ask specifically about heart and respiratory conditions. We recommend consulting your doctor before any multi-day cycling trip.

Question 5

Can I bring my own bike?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Many riders prefer to bring their own bike. We can help arrange bike transport within China, and our guides are experienced at minor roadside repairs. Please let us know your bike type when booking so we can advise on any specific considerations for the route.

Question 6

What bikes do you provide for hire?

Accepted Answer

We offer quality road bikes and gravel bikes suited to each route's terrain. All hire bikes are serviced before each tour and come with a helmet, water bottle cage and basic toolkit. If you have specific requirements (frame size, saddle type, pedal preference), let us know in advance and we'll do our best to accommodate.

Question 7

Are e-bikes available?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we can arrange e-bikes for mixed-ability groups or riders who want extra assistance on climbs. E-bike availability varies by region — please ask when enquiring. There is an additional hire fee for e-bikes.

Question 8

What should I bring in terms of cycling gear?

Accepted Answer

We recommend padded cycling shorts, a moisture-wicking jersey, cycling gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen. A lightweight rain jacket is essential on most tours. Clipless pedals and shoes are optional — flat pedals work fine. We'll send you a full packing list when you book.

Question 9

Do I need a visa to visit China?

Accepted Answer

Most nationalities require a visa to enter China. We recommend checking the latest requirements with your country's Chinese embassy or consulate well in advance of your trip. China has expanded its visa-free entry programme in recent years — your nationality may qualify. We're happy to advise based on your passport.

Question 10

What language do your guides speak?

Accepted Answer

All our guides speak fluent English and Mandarin. On routes through minority regions (Guizhou, Yunnan, Xinjiang), our local guides often speak the relevant minority languages too, which makes a real difference when visiting villages and markets.

Question 11

What accommodation is included?

Accepted Answer

We use a mix of boutique guesthouses, family-run inns and comfortable hotels depending on the region and route. All accommodation is vetted by our team — we prioritise places with character and local ownership over international chains. Rooms are typically twin or double; single supplements are available on request.

Question 12

What meals are included?

Accepted Answer

Breakfast is included on all tours. Lunches are typically eaten at local restaurants along the route — we'll guide you to the best spots. Dinners are usually at your guesthouse or a nearby restaurant. We don't include all meals in the price because we want you to have the freedom to explore local food at your own pace.

Question 13

How do I get to the start point of the tour?

Accepted Answer

Most tours start from a major city with good flight connections (Kunming for Yunnan, Chengdu for Sichuan, Urumqi for Xinjiang, etc.). We'll send you detailed arrival instructions when you book. We can also help arrange airport transfers and pre-tour accommodation if you arrive a day early.

Question 14

Is travel insurance required?

Accepted Answer

Yes — travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is required for all our tours. Cycling in remote areas of China means that in the unlikely event of a serious injury, evacuation can be expensive. We recommend a policy that specifically covers cycling and adventure activities. We're happy to suggest reputable providers.

Question 15

How do I book a tour?

Accepted Answer

Send us an enquiry through our Custom Trips form or contact us on WhatsApp. We'll confirm availability, answer your questions and send you a booking form. We don't take bookings through an automated system — every booking is handled personally by our team.

Question 16

Do you have fixed departure dates?

Accepted Answer

Our group tours run on fixed dates published each season. Custom and private tours depart on any date that suits you, subject to guide availability. If you're flexible on dates, we can often find a group tour that fits — just ask.

Question 17

What is your cancellation policy?

Accepted Answer

Cancellations made more than 60 days before departure receive a full refund minus a small administration fee. Cancellations 30–60 days before departure forfeit 50% of the tour price. Cancellations within 30 days are non-refundable. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation. Full details are in our booking terms.

Question 18

Can I join as a solo traveller?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Solo travellers are very welcome on our group tours. You'll be matched with other riders of similar ability and interests. A single supplement applies for solo accommodation — let us know if you're happy to share a twin room to avoid this.
